In the TV show, The Flash, Barry Allen and his friends go through many fears and anxieties as the series goes on. Barry a forensic specialist balances his ‘day job’ and night job of protecting the city, in different ways. At his day job Barry analyzes crime scenes and investigates mysterious crimes. His boss almost looks down on him from impressions Barry left with his tardiness for example. Barry is easily socially awkward in moments and is secluded from his fellow coworkers and looks for approval when trying to solve cases. With his night job Barry is much more confident being able to know when his suit is on he is a completely different person. To use his powers and protect the people he cares most about, it’s almost fun for him because it’s something he knows how to do best and eventually learns how to master his powers and techniques. However, he has his doubts because of his newness to the power and pressure if he is good enough to be doing what he does. Everyone has this feeling at least once in there life and I believe they built this into the storyline to show that even superhero’s can feel the same things we do. A way to connect to the audience. This feeling for Barry shows up after he is defeated by other meta humans and discourages his confidence. In the end Barry is a misfit just wanting to fit in with the rest of his coworkers at his day job, but finds this acceptance when with his friends at star labs being the flash.
What I like most about Flash are the characters and how they are involved in Barry’s life. They all help Barry through his fear of not being good enough whether they know about his powers or not. Each character shows how much they believe in him, starting back to the trauma from watching his mother be murdered, he has always been weary and protective of how he proceeds with life decisions. So to have the support is really important for Barry to do what he does in both of his jobs. The most influential person on Barry would be Iris, the girl he grew up with but is oblivious to his love for her. He fears rejection from her and the change it would bring to his life so he goes about his life as being best friends with her. What I dislike is how in each episode there is a new ‘villain’ or someone Barry and his team have to beat. I think it creates a lot of substance in the series and almost can be overwhelming because the bigger villain is still a threat when they have smaller ones in each episode to defeat.
In my adaptation I plan to choreograph a dance about the flash as almost like a little trailer. Using a song from their soundtrack I am going to have quick, flashy movements that relate to Barry’s speed. By doing this I hope it’ll show others that even though it’s a television show about a superhero the arts are everywhere and can be used for just about anything. Usually, in dance pieces artists let the audience interpret their thoughts and ideas to what the dance is actually about. But this is a little different considering the fact I’m using a song from the flash soundtrack, dancing in continuous motions and dressed in a more formal outfit to connect with Barry’s day job as a forensic scientist. Most people will probably get the idea right off the bat to what I’m dancing about. What I hope people take away from this is to be able to watch my adaptation and be able to connect with what I created that they feel something from it.
